Importance of Empathy in the Medical Environment

Empathy and soft skills form the foundation of effective healthcare, and their significance is increasingly emphasized by researchers and practitioners worldwide. Numerous scientific studies indicate that these competencies directly impact the quality of medical care, patient satisfaction, and the efficiency of medical and administrative staff.

Definition and Importance of Empathy in the Medical Environment

Empathy is defined as the ability to understand and share another person’s feelings, which is particularly crucial in healthcare. In the medical sector, empathy serves as a bridge between medical personnel and patients, facilitating trust and understanding. Researchers distinguish various types of empathy, including cognitive empathy, which involves decentering and the ability to take another person’s perspective.

In the context of healthcare, empathy is defined as understanding and feeling the patient’s emotions and perspective while providing a response (e.g., communication) that reflects this understanding and aims to help. Theoretically, insufficient empathy leads to reduced understanding of the patient’s perspective, while higher empathy fosters efforts to better meet patient needs through interpersonal and operational choices.

Studies conducted by PMC (PubMed Central) specialists have shown that empathy is a key component of mental healthcare, serving as a bridge between healthcare providers and patients that fosters understanding, trust, and treatment. This deep emotional and cognitive engagement facilitates therapeutic relationships, increases patient satisfaction, and improves treatment outcomes.

Key Soft Skills for Medical Sector Employees

Soft skills, also referred to as social competencies, are an essential element of the work of both medical and administrative staff. Research conducted by experts from MIT Sloan highlights the need to redefine the perception of these skills—not as “soft” but as “smart.” As noted by Loredana Padurean, an international lecturer at MIT Sloan, “Presenting projects is not a delicate act, handling criticism is not gentle, and dealing with office politics is certainly not for the weak. So why do we still call them soft?”

Comprehensive research conducted among medical students in the European Union identified key soft skills, including cognitive competencies (average rating of 3.84/5), analytical thinking (3.86/5), critical thinking (3.96/5), reflective thinking (3.67/5), and creative thinking. Interestingly, the importance of these skills varies by knowledge area—students of arts and humanities rate them highest (4.20/5), followed by engineering and architecture (3.95/5), sciences (3.68/5), social and legal sciences (3.71/5), and health sciences (3.64/5).

According to CPS Training research, the most crucial soft skills for nurses and midwives include empathy, communication, teamwork, stress management, problem-solving, and flexibility. Studies emphasize that treating patients, their families, and colleagues with respect and empathy—regardless of their life circumstances—is the foundation of effective healthcare.

Scientific Research on Empathy in Healthcare

A systematic review of empathy studies in healthcare, covering five decades (1971-2021), provides strong evidence on the role and importance of empathy in medical care. Among 2,270 analyzed articles, 455 met the inclusion criteria. The studies found that higher empathy correlates with better clinical outcomes and patient care experiences.

Researchers identified five categories of empathy predictors: provider demographic characteristics, provider traits, provider behavior during interactions, recipient characteristics, and organizational context. Of 128 interventional studies, 103 (80%) demonstrated a positive and significant effect of programs aimed at increasing empathy. Notably, with four exceptions, these interventions were educational programs focused on individual clinicians or trainees rather than organizational-level interventions.

Research from Jan Długosz University in Częstochowa indicates that empathy determines how people behave toward others. The authors observe that, intuitively, medical professionals should have high empathy due to their work with people in difficult, often life-threatening situations.
