63% of respondents lost work time to avoid the presence of the perpetrator of an unpleasant event

Christine L. Porath, Christine M. Pearson: The Cost of Bad Behavior: How Incivility Is Damaging Your Business and What to Do About It, Portfolio (Penguin Group) 2009

Recalling an unpleasant situation triggers reactions in the body similar to those that took place during the situation itself. Meeting the person who caused the negative experience can trigger the same emotions. No wonder we avoid people we don’t like.

However, one can get the impression that the workplace is treated as a different dimension of reality, in which the work ethic and clearly defined goals will curb this type of unproductive behavior. After all, this is unprofessional behavior. Meanwhile, our internal operating system has other priorities.

How much time and how many opportunities for meaningful communication have been wasted by rude behavior? The question is rhetorical, the solution practical. More empathy for less effort.
