“I called him Sir and he called me Jack.”

Or Jacky-boy, because why not? After all, he’s the boss and you’re his employee.

Respect must be expressed on many levels. You don’t have to leave Europe to encounter such a situation. This happens in many companies in both Eastern and Western parts of the continent. It all depends on the organizational culture.

Sometimes, when you change jobs, you automatically change the communication code. In one place, everyone calls each other by their first name and the boss is just a colleague who has other responsibilities. However, in another company two hundred meters away, employees call each other by their first names, but the manager and boss are called “Sir”, and they have the right to address you personally using a diminutive.

Does this create misunderstandings? It’s definitely worth knowing who prefers which style. There are many shades of the formal and informal when addressing each other. You can meet in a place that suits everyone. However, you have to initiate the process of discussing whether or not it’s worth it. Diagnosis is a good start.
