What really happened

Zofia gives several pieces of information in a noisy environment. Tomasz is listening, but part of the message gets lost in the combination of background noise, pace, and detail. When he asks her to repeat it, Zofia sees a human behavior — “I just told you that” — and it is easy to move from there to “he wasn’t paying attention.” Tomasz is experiencing a channel problem, not an intention problem. He heard the instruction, but he did not successfully receive all of it. When he becomes reluctant to ask again, the risk increases and the wrong version of the report is produced. The scene illustrates a simple distinction: listening and successfully hearing are not the same thing.

What the research says

Understanding speech in noise requires greater cognitive effort. When the signal is degraded, the brain must use more attention and working memory to reconstruct what was said — often described as listening effort (Pichora-Fuller et al., 2016; Rönnberg et al., 2010). A systematic review also found a clear relationship between cognitive performance and speech-in-noise perception, reinforcing that this is not simply a matter of “trying harder to pay attention” (Dryden et al., 2017). None of this means Tomasz has a hearing problem or that every request for repetition is caused by the environment. It shows that reception conditions can produce behavior that an observer may wrongly attribute to the person.

How to handle it

When an instruction contains several important elements, either improve the channel or close the message with a short summary. Tomasz can say: “I got the client, Q2, and the revision, but I missed the final point.
